Secretary Hegseth Orders U.S. Bases to Prep for 90-Day Off-Grid Operations Under FORTRESS Initiative

FORTRESS America seeks to ensure energy independence and supply chain and defense-industrial base resilience.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered continental U.S. military installations to prepare to function off-grid in case of a disruption caused by war. Under the Federal Operations for Resilience, Troop Resources, Energy, Supply, and Survivability (FORTRESS) America initiative, U.S. bases would be able to operate for 90 days without outside power or supply chains.

Secretary Hegseth outlined the initiative during his State of the Force address last month. The Pentagon has been developing nuclear microreactors for power generation at U.S. military bases. The defense secretary called the program the nation’s “insurance policy” to secure “critical capabilities, infrastructure, and resources” that the U.S. Armed Forces require.

“FORTRESS America strengthens the Nation’s military capacity from the inside out, organized around five pillars: energy independence; supply-chain and defense-industrial base resilience; a strategic defense reserve; installation hardening and cyber resilience; and resilience in space and spectrum,” Secretary Hegseth wrote in a memo last month. “Together these pillars guarantee assured access to the materials, energy, industrial capacity, and secure infrastructure on which American military power depends.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Hegseth as he heads efforts to ensure the functionality of U.S. military in case of power and supply chain disruptions.
  • For wisdom for President Trump as commander-in-chief of the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • For American military leaders to be discerning as they seek to ensure uninterrupted operations are possible at U.S. bases.
